What is transit time?
Transit time is the interval needed for a shipment to be delivered once it has been picked up from the point of departure. Basically, it is the amount of time spent when moving goods from one point to another.
Indicative transit times this peak season
With the collapse of global and local air travel and the shuttering of industries at various times, the freight and logistics industry landscape has shifted rapidly in the past six months.
For the peak season, the indicative transit times for all freight services during the peak season are as follows:
It is important to allow another day for pickups during this period.
Lockdowns and industry closures due to COVID have created significant online parcel shipping demand.
From March to October 2020, it is estimated that parcel volumes increased by 150% across all of the parcel carriers. In August alone the networks completed more parcel deliveries to Melbourne than in the first three months of the year combined. It is forecast that parcel shipping volume will be 2.5 times larger compared to the 2019 peak.
Lockdowns and industry closures in Melbourne reduced freight capacity in Victoria.
At different times between August and October 2020, freight processing sites had to operate with staff reductions due distancing regulations meaning anywhere from 10%-33% reduction in the amount of freight that could be processed through the networks. Across Victoria from August to October, we saw an increase of 1-2 days in transit times for freight going through Victoria. Whilst freight carriers are able to cross borders relatively easily, the border closures have still had an impact on the industry, resulting in a 1-2 day increase in interstate transit times for non-essential goods.
The outlook for peak season November 2020 to January 2021:
The freight industry has experienced what would normally be considered peak season volumes every month from April onward in 2020. While companies have had the chance to adjust to some of the new conditions, capacity reductions are expected to continue well into 2021.
