What are the Benefits of Lithium-Ion Batteries? (2021)Jeff Florance
What is Lithium-Ion?
The big buzz in batteries is lithium-ion technology. They are a type of battery that is now a common source of power in many everyday products such as laptops, cell phones, power tools and even vehicles. As technology evolves focusing on speed, big data and mobility, the importance of reliable portable power are massive and on the rise.
Lithium-ion offers several features that other batteries cannot, and this is why they are taking the battery market by storm.
What are the Benefits of Lithium-Ion Batteries?
Rechargeable lithium-ion (Li-on) batteries are increasingly popular as a power option for small and large cleaning equipment and power tools. Their advantages fall into five broad categories: maintenance, longevity, charging speed, safety and ease of charging.
Before diving into the specifics, let’s define what exactly are lithium-ion batteries and a little bit of the science behind them. Lithium-Ion is a type of rechargeable battery and is not the same as Lithium batteries. The main difference between Lithium-Ion and Lithium batteries is that Lithium is single-cell and non-rechargeable. Lithium-Ion batteries are secondary cells that are reusable and rechargeable.
As mentioned earlier we, categorized the benefits of Lithium-Ion batteries into five larger categories:
Unlike flooded lead-acid batteries with water levels that need to be monitored, lithium-ion batteries do not need any water for operation. This reduces the maintenance needed to keep the batteries operational, which also eliminates training new team members on the procedure and monitoring machines to ensure that water levels are correct. Lithium-ion batteries also eliminate engine maintenance.
The average lithium-ion battery lifespan for a large-capacity battery pack can be as long as eight or more years. A long service life helps provide a return on your investment in lithium-ion battery technology.
#3. Easy & Fast Charging:
Using fast-charging lithium-ion batteries means less downtime for a machine while it’s tethered to a charging station. In a busy facility, of course, the less time a machine has to sit idle, the better. Also reducing downtime for a machine, the lithium-ion battery can be opportunity charged.
This means that operational procedures don’t have to be designed around the need to allow a battery to fully charge in-between uses, and also simplifies training for team members. For example: Charging the battery in a drill or vacuum cleaner while stopped for a lunch break.
#4. Safer Facilities:
Lithium-Ion improves indoor air quality and reduces the risk of accidents. They do this by eliminating exposure to flammable fuels and battery acid with lithium-ion technology. Also, enjoy quiet operation with low dBa sound levels. For example, using a battery-powered lawnmower.
#5. Environmental Impact:
Lithium-ion batteries provide significant environmental benefits over other fossil fuel alternatives. With the steady increase in electric vehicles, we are seeing an immediate impact in the reduction of carbon emissions. Minimizing your fossil fuel machines not only benefits your long term cost but helps your business be more sustainable.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a battery without compromise, look no further than lithium-ion batteries. They offer what no other battery can such as, low maintenance, long-lasting, safe operation, lower environmental impact, easy and fast charging. Until a battery new technology comes around, Lithium-Ion is the best choice for everyday electronics we use.
Since starting my business BlackFrog Solar Lighting in 2002, we have strived to keep ahead of the competition in technology and design while remaining cost-effective. Leaps and bounds in technology over the past 5yrs has made the switch to solar and battery-powered technology, making it easier and more cost-effective.
